The year 1953 was an astonishing one in which the new partnership of physics and biology yielded one of the twentieth century’s greatest triumphs: the discovery of the DNA double helix. The twisting ladder-like structure, with paired bases forming the ‘rungs’, was to spark a revolution in biology and medicine.
