Abstract

In this chapter I present the model of lexical phonology and morphology in an introductory way and apply it to issues in English derivational and inflectional morphology of the kind raised in Part I of the book. The next chapter goes deeper into the theoretical issues that are thrown up by English, while remaining largely uncontroversial. To ensure clarity of presentation, I will initially take it for granted that the theory is totally adequate and postpone a critical evaluation until Chapter 7.
