Utilization of an ultrasound tracking system in wireless sensor networks is a well-known technique with low-cost and high-accuracy advantages in an indoor environment. In this paper, we present the implementation of an active tracking system based on an ultrasonic sensing device using the IEEE 802.15.4 compatible radio. IEEE 802.15.4 is used in wireless sensor networks because of its low power consumption and high bit-rate. Many of the technical issues for actual deployment of the system in an indoor environment are herein analyzed and solved. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2006.
