Abstract

Hundreds of human genes express mRNAs that contain inverted repeat sequences within their 3′-UTRs. When expressed, these sequences can be promiscuously edited by ADAR enzymes, leading to the retention of mRNAs in nuclear paraspeckles. Here we discuss how this retention system can be used to regulate gene expression. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
