Abstract

This paper aims to identify how the psychological adaptability of college students affects their English performance. Based on the data of570 questionnaires, the author firstly summarized the main problems with the psychological adaptability of college students in English learning. Then, the psychological adaptability of college students to English learning was evaluated under the influence of professional category, learning motivation and learning behavior. Finally, several countermeasures were proposed for English learners in colleges. The results show that there are four problems with the current psychological adaptability of college students to English learning, namely, unclear purpose, fuzzy objectives, unreasonable strategy and unsuitable test method; the college students majoring in arts can adapt to English learning more easily than those majoring in science, engineering and agriculture; the psychological adaptability of college students should be promoted through measures like stepping up training, enhancing stress tolerance, implementing psychological intervention, etc. The research results shed new light on English education in Chinese colleges.
