Abstract

Statistics on publication and citation of papers written by Japanese university researchers are processed and analyzed using ISI's National Citation Report for Japan, a statistical database on citations for scientific papers. Number of papers from Japan in 1981 through June 1999 are 853,323, and 58,472 of them are with authors from universities. National universities hold more than 70% share both in publications and citations, and get a high rate of citations per paper. The statistics on individual universities and institutes, and a list of highly cited papers are also shown with analyses on them. Discussion on problems and importance of bibliometric studies are given.
