Abstract

Key Points The dietary pattern in Latin America has become ``westernized,{''} moving away from traditional habits. Socioeconomic level is a major determinant of food intake in the region. Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in the prevalence of obesity in most countries. Most worrisome is the increase in the prevalence of obesity in children. Programs with a clear concentration in education and change in lifestyle are showing some effectiveness. To be successful, programs have to be directed to the general population providing a safe environment to increase physical activity. Objectives and goals of a program to prevent obesity are outlined.
