Abstract

Development of new magnetic materials has contributed to significant improvements in motors, generators, transformers, and a multitude of electronic instruments. Researchers continue to provide alloys with better magnetic properties allowing for miniaturization of components with accompanying weight reduction. A better understanding of magnetic behavior and its relationship to material composition and metallurgical structure has yielded alloys that provide increased efficiency of electrical components, alloys that are easily fabricated, and alloys with maximum energy products. A new rare-earth alloy system without cobalt promises a family of lightweight magnetic materials with the highest energy, at a potentially lower cost.
