Abstract

This historical and philosophical paper shows the parallel views of Warren Weaver and Lotfi Zadeh in the 1950s and 1960, respectively, on mathematics in science and technology and their calls for "new mathematics" to solve a new class of problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.
