The study aimed to analyze how trainee students understand the process of development of the professional identity of Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. Thirty trainee students joined focus group interviews in the qualitative descriptive research. The data were analyzed descriptively, performing content analysis procedure with the qualitative software Nvivo 10. The results highlight that the trainee students recognize that the scope of the area increases the possibilities of intervention; picture a highly competitive job market; realize there is little recognition and low remuneration in the field; indicate that the initial training of future professionals in the area should enable the interaction between theory and practice; and emphasize the need for a qualitative intervention in society to stimulate better recognition of Physical Education professionals.
