Abstract

Warts comprise verrucae (vulgares, plantares, planae juvenilis), verrucosis generalisata and condylomata accuminata. They are caused by a specific DNA virus; pathogenesis is discussed. Warts are diagnosed most frequently between 12 and 16 years of age. Epidemiologic studies on subjects of school age confirmed ways of transmission. Differential diagnosis includes clavus, naevus, acanthokeratoma, tuberculosis verrucosa cutis, lichen ruber verrucosus and condyloma lata. Most warts are cured spontaneously. Treatment includes suggestive methods, cytostatic drugs, keratolytic substances, other drugs, cryotherapy, surgery and irradiation. (12 references).
