Abstract

Math anxiety is a form of one's feelings both nervous, scary and fear, anxiety or fear in dealing with math problems or in doing math learning. The developement of symptoms in math anxiety is very worrying, so math learning becomes less-effective. The purpose of this study is to describe the anxiety characteristics of highschool students in mathematics learning. Type of this research is qualitative research. The research subjects were highschool students. Data collection techniques in this study used observation, interviews, and documentation. The interview instrument was modified from the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) instrument consisting of 9 question items and 2 aspects of math anxiety. The data that has been obtained will be analyzed by using constant comparative method. The results shows that there are characterictics of math anxiety of highschool students who can be divided into 3 types; anxious type, anxious type in learning process, and anxious type in evaluation. Anxious type is a category of groups consisting of subjects that need to be considered. Anxious type in the process is a group category consisting of subjects that are needed to be anxious in the mathematics learning process. Anxious type in evaluation is a group category consisting of subjects that are anxious about aspects of mathematical evaluation.
