This paper describes the testing activities carried out by IPL during the development of a system to the safety standards mandated by IEC 61508 (IEC, 1998). The system has been evaluated as SIL 1, and was coded in C++ with about 115 KLoC (thousand Lines of Code) produced, tested and delivered to the customer. Details are provided of the project's background, purpose, phasing, specification/design documentation and corresponding testing activities. The paper concludes with some thoughts on the testing activities adopted by the project and further reflections on the current relevance of the testing activities recommended by IEC 61508. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.
