In the 20th Century, most of the advances in sport sciences are concerned with bioenergetics of muscular exercise. The concepts of aerobic and anaerobic energy sources for muscular contraction and the corresponding work intensities has given rise to a wide discussion which remains open. This introduction attempts to present the main stages of this debate and the practical use which is done of scientific data. Increasing interest for the pecularities of bioenergetics of exercising children is also considered.
