Abstract

Valproate toxicity can be complicated by the development of hyperammonaemia, which can cause cerebral oedema and encephalopathy. We report the successful management of a case of valproate overdose using carnitine and review the metabolic pathways responsible for its therapeutic effects. © The Intensive Care Society 2010.
