Abstract

This chapter presents the objectives of recovery and certain factors that may promote recovery and enhance the outcome of schizophrenia. The role of multiple biological, psychological, and psychosocial factors in the outcome of schizophrenia is discussed, and the various objectives of recovery are outlined. There is a need for clinicians to understand the need for recovery from schizophrenia and what would constitute recovery from a clinical perspective. This chapter provides the basis for recovery on a symptomatic and psychosocial basis and entails the need for wellness in schizophrenia. The need for wellness-based interventions and psychosocial interventions to help the individual suffering from schizophrenia at personal, social, family, and vocational level is discussed. There is also a need for clinicians to move away from psychopharmacological interventions toward psychosocial interventions and thus work toward holistic treatment of the individual suffering from schizophrenia. The differences in the objectives for recovery for acute and chronic schizophrenia are also elucidated.
