Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve understanding of different methods of hydraulic modeling, essentially for modeling of a floodplain. We shall look at 1D storage area models and 2D models. The different models obtained from the Mascaret and Telemac2D codes will be compared for a 50 km reach of the Garonne river. The 2 models were calibrated using steady-state water surface profiles and unsteady state conditions and were compared for a major flood event on the Garonne in 1981. The results show good convergence between the results of the 1D storage area model and the 2D model. The study proved that results depend essentially on good representation of the longitudinal banks and dykes, and confirms the benefits of 1D storage area models, a promising compromise between 1D compound channel modeling and 2D modeling. © Société Hydrotechnique de France, 2011.
