The aim of research is the explanation, understanding and eventual prediction of phenomena. In order to accomplish that goal, a structured plan must be developed to guide researchers from discovery of a problem to the dissemination of the researcher's explanation and prediction of the phenomena in the form of a publishable manuscript. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for conducting rigorous and relevant research and evaluating the "worthiness" of research. In addition to developing a research framework, the research articles published from 1995-2000 in the top four accounting journals - The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Accounting, Organizations and Society - are reviewed to examine if accounting is truly a multi-worldview and multi-paradigmatic field of inquiry. The six-year journal review is also used to provide insight into the breadth of accounting research in the top accounting journals based on the framework developed.
