Abstract

The global Internet traffic is constantly increasing and consistently reaching the limits of capacity. Commonly this is challenged by upgrading the infrastructure. Alternatively this can be achieved by utilizing existing facilities more efficiently. Using a hybrid network that efficiently combines unicast and broadcast delivery can reduce Internet traffic, server loads and download durations significantly. In order to substantiate this paper introduces and evaluates the payload broadcasting facility of SatTorrent, a peer-to-peer protocol optimized for hybrid networks. The results show that it fulfills our expectations while inducing only a comparatively small amount of additional broadcast traffic.
