Abstract

The Australian-Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean has been formed by asymmetric sea-floor spreading along an east-west trending ridge (Fig. 1). This ridge (the Southeast Indian Ridge) separates two major deep-water basins, the South Australian and South Indian Basins. Vigorous bottom-water circulation and regional productivity patterns have been important variables influencing sedimentation throughout the region.
