In order to minimize the environmental problems in relation to sewage sludge, there have been studied several ways to convert that residue into some kind of raw material or energy resource. The sewage sludge can be used as raw material in the energy production. Throu- gh pyrolysis, four fractions are generated: aqueous liquid, organic, solid and gaseous. The range of substances added to the sludge can be converted into pyrolysis by several reaction pathways during the process stages. These substances give unique characteristics to the fuel fractions formed mainly by long-chain hydrocarbons. Furthermore, forms of treatment used in the raw material have also to be considered, as well as the model of the pyrolysis reactor to be employed, in order to maximize fuel efficiency. In this study, a bibliographic survey on chemical and physico-chemical characteristics of sewage sludge was done, and the forms and conditions of this pyrolysis were considered to produce bio-oil.
