Abstract

This article relates to an area of a clinical engineering, and it presents a novel approach to a creation of effective mechanical methods and devices for treatment of bleeding esophageal varices. Currently, numerous endoscopic methods are widely used in the diagnostics and the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices. However, in the case of acute bleeding from esophageal varices such methods will be ineffective because the blood will drabble the optics of the endoscope and take away sclerosing agents and/or glues from an injury. Therefore, the endoscopic methods are used after a stopping of acute bleeding by balloon tamponade, etc. The paper presents a new mechanical method for the treatment of acute bleeding from esophageal varices by a transformable probe with a superelastic spiral. This method versus balloon tamponade permits not only to arrest the bleeding but also to give a free access toward the injury for endoscopic and other methods. In the present paper, we will describe the new concept of the transformable probe for effective stop bleeding from esophageal varicose veins based spiral-compression method.
