Abstract

There is relatively little research on the teaching of idioms to elementary- level learners in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language (CSL). Due to the absence of an idiom syllabus based on different Chinese proficiency levels, teachers hardly know what to teach. In order to solve the problem of what and how to teach at the elementary level, this paper suggests teaching narrative idioms to beginners. It analyzed the definition of narrative idioms and their pedagogical values, discussed the difficulties of teaching idioms at the elementary level, and suggests some effective teaching methods. This study demonstrated that it is necessary and possible to start idiom teaching for elementary-level CSL learners.
