Abstract

Recent advances in microtechnology and nano-technology have enabled Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) and nanoparticles to be used as interfaces in cell biology. Complex silicon based MEMS can be precisely micro-nanomachined offering higher performance and versatility. The development of intracellular silicon based devices is the key to providing real-time monitoring of activity within individual living cells. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.
