Surface-active organic matter collected from the air-sea interface is examined using mass spectrometry. The mass spectra reveal significant spatio-temporal variability in the chemical composition of sea slick materials. This compositional variability leads to differences in observed surface pressure-elasticity relationships. © 2006 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
