The developmental preparation of the mammary gland for milk production that occurs during pregnancy is followed by an equally dramatic process of involution as the gland returns to its prepregnancy state. Two detailed, microarray-based surveys reported in this issue extend our understanding of the nature and timing of molecular and cellular events in involution that underlie these developmental changes. © 2004 BioMed Central Ltd.
