This study reviewed 29 young patients with 33 arthritic hips undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) for unilateral or bilateral disease. Although the 10 months results were good, at 5 years 57 % had actual or potential loosening of at least one component of the prosthesis. Acetabular component loosening occurred more than twice as frequently as femoral loosening. Poorer results occurred if there was a history of a previous mold cup arthoplasty, heavy activity, unilateral arthroplasty and body weight >82 kg.
