Abstract

This chapter uses data triangulation to explore the sociolinguistic profile and linguistic diversity of local and international students attending English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses at Italian universities, and investigate how this is dealt with by students and the institution. The context was analysed through a student questionnaire, a descriptive content analysis of university webpages, and student focus groups. The questionnaire results were triangulated with the official university pages by means of descriptive content analysis to see whether any attention was paid to mixed classes of national and international students in the teaching aims and practice. Data from the focus groups were analysed to explore how diversity affects learning in an international environment. Focusing on such topics might help raise awareness among stakeholders and benefit policymaking decisions.
