Abstract

We present a visual sensor networkcomprising wide field-of-view (FOV)passive cameras and pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) active camerascapable ofautomatically capturing closeup video of selected pedestrians ina designated area. The passive cameras can track multiple pedestrianssimultaneously and any PTZ camera can observe a single pedestrianat a time. We propose a strategy for proactive PTZ camera controlwhere cameras plan ahead to select optimal camera assignment andhandoff with respect to predefined observational goals. The passivecameras supply tracking information that is used to control the PTZcameras.
