The catastrophic rainstorm dropped as much as half the mean annual precipitation within 32 hours, triggering landslides and floods throughout 10 counties in the vicinity of San Francisco Bay. More than 18 000 of the slides transformed into debris flows that swept down hillslopes or drainages, causing considerable damage and some deaths. After the disaster intensive studies were made and the 16 papers in the publication document the results. After an introductory paper on the historical setting of the storm the organisation is into sections: rainfall; debris flows and other landslides; flooding; marine effects. Papers are abstracted separately. -M.A.Bass
