Abstract

Recently, there has been increasing interest in the study of polarization parameters from randomly turbid media as well as biological tissues because of the potential for non-invasive practical applications. In this work, an analytical technique based on Stokes polarimetry and the Mueller matrix decomposition method is proposed for extracting the effective linear birefringence (LB), linear dichroism (LD), circular birefringence (CB), circular dichroism (CD), linear depolarization (L-Dep), and circular depolarization (C-Dep) properties of anisotropic material. We then will discuss our comprehensive experimental polarization system setup, optical parameters analysis to acquire meaningful results from anisotropic material for characterization. The validity of the proposed measurement method in testing different samples (i.e. polystyrene sphere suspension and human blood plasma samples containing dissolved d-glucose powder) is proved. The experimental results showed that the rotation angle had linear relationship with the concentration of the glucose. This new algorithm introduced here has several advantages not only in solving effective optical parameters but also in maintaining the accuracy by decoupling all parameters in the analytical model. Thus, the method has promising applications in diabetic diagnosis and monitoring.
