Abstract

Introduction: In Mexico and in the world, there is a lack of studies that analyze the risk factors and the outcomes between patients with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) vs. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted in the northeastern region of Mexico. 1012 pregnant women were recruited, risk factors and outcomes were compared between groups GDM, T2DM and healthy pregnant women. In addition, they were analyzed according to the trimester of pregnancy in which they arrived for the first consultation and in the case of T2DM, the effect of treatment on the outcomes. Results: In comparison with the GDM group, it was observed that T2DM patients had an alarming increase in the fatality index of outcomes as early abortions, stillbirths and perinatal mortality; including two severely flagged outcomes: requirement of hospitalization (OR: 153.22; p < 0.0001; CI95%: 21.02-1118.6) and presence of malformations (OR: 71.49; p < 0.0001; CI95%: 9.25.
