Malay ethnicity is the unit of analysis of the divorce study because its population is quite large compared to other ethnicities, reaching 34.5% of the population of Pontianak City. Therefore, this ethnicity tends to make a significant contribution to the increase in divorce rates. This research aims to clarify the process, perceptions, and reasons for Malay women filing for divorce. This research is descriptive qualitative, with purposive determination of informants, data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and document studies, then analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study indicate that although this ethnic group is a fairly large population and still upholds traditional customs, related to divorce suits through religious courts, as well as perceptions about divorce vary greatly. This is influenced by cultural background as well as past experiences. The reasons for contesting divorce with husbands are very diverse, so it can be understood that the act of divorce carried out by married couples is now accepted as a normal and natural process.
