The complex structure of the configuration space of a hard optimization problem inspired to draw analogies with physical phenomena, which led three researchers of IBM society - S. Kirkpatrick, C.D. Gelatt, and M.P. Vecchi - to propose in 1982, and to publish in 1983, a new iterative method: the simulated annealing technique Kirkpatrick et al. Science 220(4598), 671-680 (1983), [23], which can avoid the local minima.
