Neuromodulation can be defined as the alteration of nerve activity through targeted delivery of a stimulus that is usually electrical or magnetic. When directed towards peripheral nerves, neuromodulation aims to mimic normal function of efferent nerves. Several methods of neuromodulation are used to elicit an effect, and this evolving therapeutic technique may hold out hope for people with spinal cord injury (SCI), especially if it can be implemented early.
