Abstract

This chapter tries to answer some central questions in the study of derivational morphology: What are the units of analysis? What are the mecha- nisms that underlie the creation, as well as the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships, of derived words? For each of these questions we discuss a wide variety of approaches in different subdisciplines of linguistics (phonetic, theoreti- cal-linguistic, psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic and computational-linguistic), and see what evidence the diverse approaches have brought forward to support their ideas
