Abstract

In this paper, we investigate performance of the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) and compare it with that of the Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). It is well known that HMIPv6 can reduce considerable number of signaling messages to handle Mobile IP registration locally [1]. For the more detailed performance analysis, we propose an analytic mobility model based on the random walk to take into account various mobility conditions. Based on this analytic model, we studied the impact of subnet residence time, packet arrival rate, and various mobility conditions on total signaling cost. The simulation results shows that HMIPv6 can has superior performance to MIPv6 when the packet arrival rate is low and the mobile node's mobility is high. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
