Hamka is an Indonesian writer and scholar who has lived since the Dutch colonial era until contemporary. Hamka wrote some of his life experiences in the form of literary works, one of those is the novel Menunggu Beduk Berbunyi (1950). This novel contains important events regarding Soe- karno-Hatta's arrest and exile to Bangka Island. Reading this novel will be a new experience for students who take courses in Modern Indonesian History. Qualitative research methods are used to critically examine the contents of novels for the development of teaching materials on modern Indonesian history. A semiotic analysis was used to dissect Hamka's novel Menunggu Beduk Ber- bunyi (1950). The results of the novel analysis Menunggu Beduk Berbunyi (1950) were used for the development of teaching material for Modern Indonesian History in order to enrich the historical awareness of students regarding the subjects of Modern Indonesian History.
