This contribution will concentrate on the implications of data from new studies of Mars during the past decade or so in terms of martian geothermal resources, and the potential differences in exploiting geothermal resources on Mars from our terrestrial experiences. An excellent discussion of the utility of geothermal energy on Mars was given by Fogg (1996), who makes strong arguments for the practicality of using geothermal energy on Mars with respect to other potential energy sources: these arguments will not be repeated here. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
