Released in 1994 and derived from the cross Earliglow X Atlas, this Fragaria ananassa variety was selected for its vigour, its attractive, symmetrical and large fruits which have good colour and flavour and outstanding aroma, its late-early to early-midseason ripening and its resistance to red-stele root-rot disease (Phytophthora fragariae). It has also shown resistance to Colletotrichum acutatum. Fruits are firm and tough-skinned, handle well, and have a low proportion of culls. Delmarvel yielded as well as, and produced larger fruits than, Allstar in Maryland, Raritan in New Jersey, and Glooscap in Kentucky. It produces well on either light or heavy soils and in matted rows or raised-bed culture. Delmarvel is recommended for trials in the middle Atlantic and adjacent regions as a high-quality, early to early midseason, shipping and local market cultivar with multiple fungal resistance.
