Abstract

After sustaining a full-thickness circumferential or near-circumferential skin burn of the extremities or thorax, an eschar might likely form. The tight inelastic eschar may interfere with the circulation of the extremities leading to loss of the limb. In case the thorax is involved, it may also lead to respiratory compromise. The need of an escharotomy is therefore present. The surgical division of the eschar would help alleviate the pressure and as such prevent further injury or functional compromise.
