The objective of this study is to analyze different governance models that cooperative firms may adopt. We describe the monistic and dualistic models and the different types that this latest model can present. Additionally, we analyzed the determinants of their choice between cooperative firms. We focus on size, age and activity of the cooperative. The empirical analysis is conducted with a sample of Spanish cooperative firms. Results show that the dualist model is mainly used in large and older cooperative firms, whose main activity is industry or services.
