Abstract

Facial feature detection plays an important role in biological recognition applications, such as criminal investigation, special surveillance, photographic mode, etc. In this paper, we propose an approach to achieve the mouth feature extraction and detection. This approach involves the steps of skin-color segmentation, face feature extraction, edge detection and edge projection. In order to more effectively and correctly locate the mouth position, we adopt two phases to perform our purposes, one phase is to label face mask by using our designed skin-color filter, the other phase is to detect the edge and to compute edge projection for the decided mouth region within the face mask. The present results demonstrate that our proposed system can achieve a high accuracy for month detection and can obtain coarsely the face posture estimation based on specified rule. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
