This article parallels women's representation in Parliament with their entry into a traditionally secured male profession. Gender issues within political routine as well as within politics in general reveal widespread discrimination against women who access power and exercise it ; it also discloses the instrumentalization of specific stereotypes generally affecting women. Gender inequalities are particularly obvious in Parliamentary politics because male politicians have had major control over the profession through their ability to adapt and bypass rules, as well as to resist social pressure. © 2005 Presses de Sciences Po.
