Abstract

A series of 1, 5-benzodiazepines were synthesized by condensation of o-phenylenediamine with different ketones and effect of different aliphatic acids used as catalyst was studied. Among the various acids screened, chloroacetic acid came out to be a versatile catalyst and the corresponding products were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields (85-94%) under solvent free conditions.
