Abstract

In Indicator SA VoI6/N01-2 (1989:65-69), Mcintosh and Colvin challenged some assumptions about the potential employment and development spinoffs derived from the more successful rural entrepreneurs. Their research investigation found that initial entry into such activities is limited to people endowed with capital and skills -the main beneficiaries tend to be older men who have retired from urban wage employment. In this sequel Mcintosh reports on his community development projects in rural Transkei and Kwazulu. He considers the viability of development agencies promoting rural production activities through producer groups instead of through individual enterprises.
