Abstract

A revision of the genus Ceramium in South Africa has been undertaken. The morphology of the genus is discussed, and a key to the ten species which are recognised is provided. The following new taxa and new combinations are published:  Ceramium arenarium, C. papenfussianum,  C. diaphanum (Lightf.) Roth var. capense, —var. pulchellum (Kuetz.) (Hormoeeras pulchellum Kuetz.), C. centro- ceratiforme. Ceramium capense Kuetz., which was transferred to  Microcladia by Papenfuss, is regarded as belonging to  Ceramium.
