The emergence of new non-invasive technologies for assessing the structure and the function of the human brain has provided us with means to investigate the neural substrates underlying cognitive processes with the goal of achieving a better understanding of cognition. This paper is focused on discussing the contributions that assessment of neural processes underlying cognition brings to our understanding of cognition as well as the impact of this understanding of cognition on military operations. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
