Abstract

In this paper the ability of the STATCOM and SSSC supplementary controllers to enhance the dynamic stability of a single-machine infinite-bus power system using linearized Phillips-Heffron model is compared. These controllers are tuned to simultaneously shift the undamped electromechanical modes to a prescribed zone in the s-plane according to the eigenvalue-based multi-objective function comprising the damping factor and the damping ratio using particle swarm optimization technique that has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results. Simulation results have been carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK show that the SSSC performance is better than STATCOM and it provides higher damping than that of the STATCOM. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.
