Phylogenetically, the cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) are among the oldest viruses known. Their differentiation parallels that of individual species so that it is not unusual to have relative or absolute species specificity. As a result of years of adaptive evolution, the bulk of human infection is predominantly subclinical. CMVs establish a latent infection after the acute phase of the infection has resolved.
